Statement from Andrea Miller,
President of the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund
New York, NY – The National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund (NIRH Action Fund) today praised the New York State Legislature for passing the Gender Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), urgently-needed and long overdue legislation that prohibits discrimination against transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender non-binary New Yorkers. While the State Assembly has passed GENDA repeatedly for more than a decade, the legislation was previously blocked by Senate Republicans.
Its long-awaited passage today comes during a moment at which violence against transgender people is at an all-time high, and follows the Trump and Pence administration’s cruel October decision to narrow the definition of gender under Title IX.
The following is a statement from Andrea Miller, president of the NIRH Action Fund:
“NIRH has long stood with, seen, and respected transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary individuals, and today New York has shown that it does too. We commend the State Legislature for passing this long-overdue legislation that will ensure these individuals rights are protected under state law. As the Trump and Pence Administration continues to assail the rights of the transgender community, GENDA marks an important step forward in the fight to ensure each and every individual is able to make their own decisions about their own bodies. We will continue to work toward a world in which every person has the freedom to exist and the ability to control their reproductive and sexual lives.”
The NIRH Action Fund conducts nonpartisan advocacy and electoral engagement to advance reproductive freedom in states and cities across the country.
